Summary: Despite of government 'Project Eternity' declaration, 5 genius boys were saved after their parents managed to hide their real intelligence. 10 years later, they witness their parents get caught in misunderstand and aim to save them.
Yet, they never thought it will drag to something serious.

Chapter 1

After Japan’s former prime minister retired, his position was replaced by Japan’s Secretary of Defense with majority vote. The whole nation lived in peace for years. It however didn’t stay long when rumor that the new prime minister was suffering with an incurable sickness spread. Not long after, Japan was shocked by the new government declaration that every single child who posses with unordinary cleverness will be taken away to under their care in order to do research for the government’s new project. The declaration became a nightmare for every genius child since it means they will be forever separated from their family and the parents as well will never have a chance to see their kids again.

The new project called Project Eternity.

Tokyo, autumn 2002

 

The day was cloudy. Mr. Matsumoto was driving his car while his wife on the passenger’s seat beside protectively hugged their little boy’s body. It sounded impossible to escape from government’s annual examination to every 7 years old kid in Japan, but since Mrs. Matsumoto’s body couldn’t bear to give birth anymore, the couple only can try all their best to ensure their only child will not be taken away from them. Jun meanwhile just obediently returned his mother’s hug with his eyes watching outside of their moving car. Still in a small age, Jun couldn’t understand with what is going to happen on him. He thought maybe his mom and dad was taking him out for spending time together.

“Honey, do you have any idea where we’re heading to?”

Mrs. Matsumoto finally broke the silence.

“Superintendent Sakurai’s house.”

“The chief of Tokyo prefectural Police headquarters? Why? Isn’t he is also one of the government people?”

“My brother told me to go there before. He said we can seek help from there.”

The wife lost for words. Though she had no idea where they can hide Jun, to see the high rank man is also risky. What if he’s working with the prime minister? He’s also under the government didn’t he? Though it’s illegal for police to work for any politician, how far they can trust him?

Only think about it already make her terrified. Immediately, she tightened her hold around Jun’s body and kissed her son’s forehead worriedly. Her husband saw it and placed his hand on her, trying to reassure that everything will be alright. After about 20 minutes driving, they finally reached a western style house which was built in a middle of forest. Mr. Matsumoto immediately parked his car and led his wife and their child to the only building there. Soon, another car entered the place which later revealed a worried married couple with their son was holding hands with the mother. Jun who was lift by his mother just quietly watched the unknown family approached them from behind.

“Satoshi, just hold my hand okay?”

The mother of the unknown family told her son when they already stood in front the door together with Jun’s family. Mr. Matsumoto then knocked the door, followed by a woman’s voice from inside.

“Who’s there?”

 “Please help us. Our kid will be taken away by the government and we heard the superintendent can do something about it.”

At a same time, Jun and the Satoshi boy saw two more cars entered the area. When both cars stopped next to theirs, a lady finally opened the door.

“Come in. Hurry up.”

As soon as the lady gave a way, the two families quickly get inside. Both then immediately took steps further into the house’s comfy living room before abruptly stopped by the sight of a boy sitting on couch with a book in his hands. Soon, they heard footsteps sound came from the corridor.

“Are you Chief Sakurai?”

Mr. Matsumoto worriedly questioned when a man showed up from there.

“Yes I am.”

“Please, help us. They’re going to take our kid away.”

Both families started to beg. Jun still wrapped his arms around his mother’s neck when his eyes met the boy who was called Satoshi. They just exchanged smile before two more families suddenly entered the house. Mrs. Sakurai then quickly closed the door as soon as the new guests safely stepped inside there.

“These two families also have special child.”

Chief Sakurai just nodded and turned to his son on the couch.

“Sho?”

Immediately, the little boy looked up from his book.

“Bring your new friends to the reading room now.”

Sho smiled. He later ran to approach the other boys who in a same age with him.

“Come with me. I’ll show you some interesting books.”

The parents there looked at each other before told their sons to go and followed Sho. At first the four kids who just came there a little bit confused by their parents’ request, but finally, they listened and happily ran together with Sho into nearest corridor. Right after the children lost from their parents’ sight, another guest suddenly knocked the Sakurai’s residence door from outside.

“Mr. Sakurai, we’re from government.”

All the four couples looked at the door in horrify. The Sakurai couple on the other hand just calmly exchanged trusting gaze. After told the parents to calm down and took their seat, Chief Sakurai gave an approve look to his wife as a signal to move to the door.

 “Let them in.”

Tokyo, autumn 2012

“Though it was a dangerous act, Tokugawa Ieyasu decided to support Oda Nobukatsu who was the eldest son and the heir of Oda Nobunaga during 1584…”

Instead of focus on the lesson in front, Nino shift a little to palming his chin. The history teacher long explanation which is actually just a copy and paste from their textbook totally makes him bored. With his eyes sticks on the view outside the class’s window, he slowly lost in his thought until he hears soft snores come from the person next to him. Almost immediately, he turns to the sleeping guy and whispers as low as he can.

“Oh-chan, wake up.”

However, the sleeping guy just snuggles more; trying to find a comfortable place on his folded arms.

 The movement makes Nino sighs. Just when he tries to make his friend awake again, he freezes when their history teacher already stops next to the other one’s table.

“OHNO-KUN!”

Ohno immediately jerks up, but later calmly rubs his eyes.

“I believe you fall asleep cause you’re busy doing your revision for this subject last night. So, could you tell me what the name of Oda Nobunaga first son is?”

“Um…”

The student scratches his back head sleepily when the teacher raises her eyebrow. After few more seconds passed, the teacher smirks. She then leaves Ohno’s seat and walks back to the front.

“Unless you’re as clever as Hattori-kun, don’t dare to sleep in my class.”

Hear the teacher is praising him, a guy with rabbit teeth smiles smugly and pushes his thick black glasses up. Jun who sits two seats beside him just rolls his eyes by the act. That nerdy always get first place and praises by every teacher who enter their class. If not because they need to pretend ‘ordinary’, he maybe already challenge the other one for sitting an engineering paper together with Ohno and see who is going to finish it in a short time with flying colors.

Not long then the bored fourth period finally over.  The whole class immediately back to its noisy state right after their history teacher’s leave. Soon, one by one student heads out from their class to change into their physical education clothes, leaving the class corridor all empty when Jun and his four childhood friends finally comes out from their class.

“Satoshi, how come you can fell asleep in the most babbling teacher’s class?”

Pouting, Ohno turns to him.

“I was fixing my fish detector device in my dad’s private workshop last night. The other day I catch a very big Tuna and it by chance dropped into the sea.”

“Fishing again, huh?”

Nino chuckles before lays his arm on the other one’s shoulder.

Ohno is the son of a mechanic and lives in a very peaceful pace with his parents and an older sister. Anything about or related to mechanical is his specialty. He always lends his hand in his father’s workshop, but only at night after his father’s business close. Since he was little, he can figure out what is wrong with his father’s customers machine easily and now can repair almost anything no matter how complicated or terrible the problem is. Due of his possesses with amazing art talent, he also loves to wonder around whether to draw anything or framework of any creation that comes into his mind. It always gives him an advantage to build any machine or device by himself if it’s needed.

“Do you guys think Hattori-kun is also Cool like us?”

The other four turn to Aiba before chuckle in unison. Cool is their own way to express genius. For their safety, they change the word when they are talking with each other.

“I don’t think so.”

“Yup. He just a nerdy who wants to boast about his scientist background, you know. That’s why he struggles to get every teacher’s attention.”

His words gain a smack from Sho as a reminding not to talk rude about other people.

Nino’s father is a promoter in a famous computer’s programmer company. Almost every two months his father will bring a new creation to home so Nino can gives a try. Nino is really good when it comes about accessing, damaging system, creating virus and hackings until he managed to break into nation’s police department security system two years ago which later caught by his father. Feel it was a disrespect act toward Chief Sakurai; Mr. Ninomiya immediately brought his son to see the high rank man for apologize. Unexpectedly, Chief Sakurai just laughed when find out about it. He even thanked Nino since it’ll give him a good reason to improve the quality of the department security level.

“But scientist is amazing. Who knows he inherits his parents’ intelligence?”

“Then, he will never stick in a same class with us.”

Jun starts to chuckle when Aiba still doesn’t want to give up from questioning them.

As the only heir of Matsumoto’s pharmacy, it is normal if Jun knows all type of medicine supply in his family’s store together with its ingredients and effects. The extra ordinary is when he able to identify each of it when he just 7 and masters all type of medicines and drugs’ mixture when he is 12. Since it is rare to find kids with amazing drugs’ knowledge, the neighbors always talking about it until there’s once time when the government suddenly came to Matsumoto’s residence to ensure about Jun’s rumor. Jun however was saved after he swallowed his almost complete drug which immediately causes him to lose all his memory. Fortunately, it didn’t work long and he returned to his real self safely several hours later.

The five guys then just happily tease each other while walking through the school’s corridor. They’re walking pass the teacher’s coffee room exactly when the television is broadcasting morning news.

[-“…after hid him for three years. The 10 years old boy is now taken to the pacify building before will be moved to the government’s building to join Project Eternity. His parents now are under arrested until their punishment will be decided.”]

The five guys stop abruptly. Silently, they take a peek on the television from the room’s half open door which is now showing a picture of a boy.

“Another attempt to escape, huh?”

They hear the vice principal says while calmly taking a sip of his mug in front the screen. A female boyish teacher who is beside him just sighs.

“Poor parents. They only want to stay with their child.”

“But they just broke the law. I wonder where they hid their child for the whole three years.”

“Nobody knows. Anyway, his parents will definitely receive a very heavy punishment, right?”

The serious conversation goes on. Seeing his friends’ expression already change, Sho decides to leave.

 “Let’s go guys.”

He smiles when the rest nod. As a special kid too, Sho knows how hard to live in their current circumstance. It’s such a miracle they still can live peacefully until now though they are surrounding by commoners every day for the whole 10 years. After all, if the government already feels suspicious about them, there’s definitely no way out anymore and it’s only the matter of time till their parents will be arrested to face death penalty.

Soon, they see their homeroom teacher is running toward them from the opposite way. His face looks worry when suddenly stops right in front them.

“Guys, go and pack your bag now. Aiba-kun’s father is waiting for all of you outside the school’s gate.”

“My dad? Why?”

“He said there’s something happen to Sakurai-kun’s family.”

“Eh?”

The other four turn to Sho. Somehow, they can feel it might be not a good thing.

“N-No way…”

Sho slumps into the chair behind him. Nino and Jun who are the closest only can pat his back to calm him down as his face changes to white pale.

“Don’t worry Sho-kun. Maybe the government takes your parents away because of other matter. They must be already looking for you if they find out you’re actually special kid.”

However, Sho just shakes his head with a stressful sigh by Mrs. Aiba’s words.

“Even it’s so, there’s a chance that they already know my dad was the one behind the Cool’s hiding. It won’t help anything either.”

“We can guarantee that your mom and dad are still safe now. They’re not arrested. That’s what your dad told us before he followed the government people.”

This time, it is Mr. Ninomiya turns to speak. After 10 years ago incident, the five families become so close with each other. For the four parents, they realize that this is the right time for them to return Sakurai’s family help. They even don’t bother by the consequences that they might face if they choose to involve themselves within this matter.

After promise the boys that they will be back soon, the parents altogether drive away from Aiba family restaurant to the government headquarters. Sho however just spacing out since the leave until he jerks up by Aiba sudden pats on his back.

“Sho-chan, it’ll be alright. Trust us.”

“Yeah. You’re not alone. Our mom and dad will definitely do something about it.”

Sho purses his lips.

“Thanks guys.”

He then deeply inhale, try to calm himself down.

The reason why Sho’s father can hide any special kid’s trace without fail is because of his position as an important person in police department. 10 years ago Mr. Sakurai was the Chief of Tokyo prefectural Police department, but now he is working as The Chief of the National Police Agency. After encounters Sho’s extraordinariness in deductions and physics, Mr. Sakurai decides to help the others who also has a special kid like him though he knows how dangerous his decision will be. When Sho finally reaches his 16 last year, Chief Sakurai finally agreed with his son’s stubbornness to teach him anything that related with the government and law so one day he can helps his father as well.

“Now, it’s better if you guys stay at my place until we receive any information about Sho-chan’s mom and dad.”

With his hands on his hips, Aiba beams all his childhood friends a smile. Soon, one of his father’s workers suddenly peeks inside from behind the living room’s door.

“Sorry for disturbing you guys. Masaki, we need your help to take the customers’ order.”

“Okay. Sure.”

He nods with a smile before the worker lost into the busy restaurant again.

“It’s lunch time already. I’m hungry.”

“Can you serve us something, Masaki?”

“Okay, but please wait until all the customers gone.”

Nino and Jun groan at a same time. While giggling, Aiba just quickly run into his family’s restaurant from the living room’s space which just separated by a soundproof wall.

Despite of Aiba’s cheerfulness, he’s actually also like the other four. Although he doesn’t have a specific talent in any field like his friends, he’s given with an unbelievable memorizing ability. He can remember anything that he just see, hear, smell or feel once in a very great detail. Every time he takes order from the customers he pretend to write it on his notepad, but the truth it is all blank. For Ohno, Sho, Nino and Jun, Aiba’s ability is the creepiest one. They always avoid from teach Aiba anything since they’re afraid if Aiba will ‘suck’ all their knowledge one day and leave nothing. Furthermore, ‘a living recorder’ ability is the rarest to be found based on what Mr. Sakurai said before.

Knowing that they can’t do anything anymore, the four other guys immediately take off their blazer. Nino then moves to grab for the Pocky’s box on the table in front him. As he calmly takes a bite of it, Jun shifts to grab for the television’s remote and turn it on.

“Nino, you shouldn’t eat it without Masaki’s permission.”

“It’s fine. You also know he will be more pissed off if we act so polite in his house. Want some?”

Sho just shakes his head. Yet, he surprises to see the already starving Ohno and Jun move to take one for each of them before quickly back to their previous position. Sighting it, Sho slowly turns back to Nino who already smiles meaningfully to him.

“I’ll take one.”

He giggles when the hacker gives him a thumb up. The four of them then just sit in silence while watching the television’s screen in front. Since there’s no interesting program is currently showing, Jun start to change the channel one by one before stop on emergency news broadcasting.

[-“…crowd gather for express their dissatisfied after the taken of the 10 years old Kita Shouji. As you can see on your television’s screen, I’m currently standing in front of the government headquarters and the crowds behind me are doing demonstration while bringing some banners with them. But until this second, government still doesn’t give any response.”]

“Demonstration?”

The four guys gather in front of the television immediately. Their eyes go wider by the sight of angry demonstrator with headband written ‘FREE’ on their head while shouting angrily in front of the government’s building entrance. There’s nothing like that happen after the drafting of new laws which is related with the Project Eternity 15 years ago. Soon, the camera focuses on the announcer again who is now approaching one of the demonstrators there.

[-“What do you think about the government decision to give Kita Shouji-kun’s parents a death penalty?”]

[-“It’s obviously ridiculous! They just want to live with their child! What’s wrong with it?! Didn’t they already have more than enough children for the Project Eternity?! Parents are human being and not heartless like them!”]

People behind the man cheer full enthusiasm by it.

“Though I feel happy with their ‘concern’, they’re going to dig their own grave by doing that. The current government is not a type who will just stay still when there’s someone who dissatisfied with them; harmful or not.”

“Maybe they thought the government will listen to them by doing that. It’ll be better if they just stay silent but planning on something brilliant than show their spirit without any further idea.”

Suddenly, the crowd of demonstrators shouts angrily.

[-“Seems, someone are coming out from the entrance.”]

The announcer immediately runs toward the entrance together with the mad people around her. She and the cameraman however stops when realize it is a troupe of black uniforms soldier with gas mask.

[-“We want all of you to leave this place!”]

[-“We won’t if you’re not letting Kita Shouji and his parents free!”]

[-“Yeah! Let him and all the taken away children with you guys free! They deserve to live freely!”]

The crowd starts to shout like hysteria. They however stop when a soldier gives a shoot to the air.

[-“We will count until 10! Leave or you’ll be arrested for creating trouble!”]

Now the crowd worriedly looks at each other. It doesn’t stay long when the angry man before suddenly shouts that he is not afraid with the threat and will keep fighting for the sake of the victim’s life. His spirit was answer by an unbelievable agree shout by the rest behind him immediately. Later, the crowd makes their move to the soldier and seems not hesitant to use violence as well. Jun who surprises to see it clumsily flips open his phone.

“What’s wrong?”

“Our mom and dad are going there! We need to stop them before-”

Another gunshot sound comes from the soldier which makes the whole crowd starts to run away while screaming when the place suddenly covers by white tear gas. The cameraman is also running, leaving his coworker who already lost from the camera’s sight. Soon, his camera catches a glimpse of their parents’ cars which are gradually approaching the place from afar.

“That’s them!”

“Did your dad pick up your call, Jun?!”

“Wait a sec-Hello? Dad? Are you there?”

Ohno, Sho and Nino move to the other one immediately. They notice that Jun’s forehead wrinkle a bit as he tries to catch what the other line said. When he puts his phone in loudspeaker mode so all of them there can hear it too, Aiba suddenly enters the living room with a tray of juice.

“What’s-”

“Shh.”

Aiba immediately locks his mouth with confuse blinks. When he puts the tray on table nearby, sound of something crack follows by shouts and footsteps suddenly heard from the phone.

-“-n-go Sho-ouse-here-“

“Dad?”

This time they hear the phone drop to ground.

-“RUN!”

“Dad!”

A gunshot sound and everything went silent. Although Jun tries to call for his father for several times, he receives no answer from the other one. The broadcasted news also already stops and screening some commercials to cover the news showing time.

“We need to go there right now!”

“It’s too dangerous.”

“But we can’t just stay here too! Our parents might be in dangerous!”

“Calm down Jun. Satoshi was right.”

Jun frowns.

“Your phone call was not clear. I think it is maybe because the government already places something around there to detect any movement or access from inside and otherwise to avoid trespassing.”

“So…our mom and dad can’t escape though. Plus, the soldier must be thought they’re a part of the demonstrators.”

“Wasn’t Jun’s dad said something about Sho before?”

“You remember it, right Masaki?”

Aiba nods.

“Your father mentioned something like that related to Sho-chan’s house.”

“Sho’s house? Go to Sho’s house?”

“I’m not sure.”

“But maybe it’s also the same reason why the government brings my parents with them.”

“We better hurry then.”

All of them immediately stormed out; leaving Aiba who is still stay at the same spot. The cheerful guy doesn’t know why, but he somehow knows that there is something not right about Jun’s father uncompleted sentence before.

Yet, he still runs to follow them when Nino’s shout startle him to quickly come with them.
