Chapter 3

Sounds of disappearing engine car bit by bit bring Aiba back to conscious. The cheerful guy then slowly opens his eyelids, slightly frowning to see dark night above him. Even his body feels so weak with a stinging feeling on his neck. The moment he finally gains part of his energy, he pushes his body to sit up on the ground under him. To his surprise, he found Ohno, Nino and Jun is lying unconsciously around him just like him while ago.

‘What just happened?’

He confusedly looks around.  With the help from his strong memory and the light from lamp post around there, he immediately realizes that they’re now in a park which is not far from their neighborhood. Unfortunately, there’s no hint of why they suddenly appear there. Although he gives all his best to recall what just happened to them, there’s still nothing comes into his mind even until the moment his friends one by one wake up from their fainting state.

“W-What…happen?”

Nino asks while tremblingly push the ground under them to make himself sit up. Like Aiba, his body also feels weak and the headache he feels only make his condition worst.

“Why are we here?”

“I don’t know.”

They immediately look at Ohno when the other one suddenly sigh.

“My neck is hurt…”

He murmurs while rubbing his neck. He however frowns when Jun abruptly stops him.

“What?”

Confuse clearly shows on his face when the other suddenly removes his right hand from covering the sore part on his neck. Frowning, Aiba and Nino also come closer from behind to see what Jun is doing.

“Is that a red dot?”

“A red dot? Chicken pox?”

“No. It’s really small and just one. Right on your vein…”

The chemist stops. Immediately, he turns to the other two guys beside him and checks their neck for a same wound.

“You also have it Jun.”

Aiba says while pointing at his neck. Jun rubs lightly to where Aiba was mentioning before something finally popped in his mind.

“Last time we’re watching television in Aiba-chan’s house right?”

“Yeah. But after that you called your dad because of the news.”

“And then your dad mentioned something about Sho-chan’s house…”

“Wait. Where’s Sho-chan?”

Ohno’s words startling them. Clumsily, the four guys look around for their absence friend. However, there’s no even a single soul aside of them there. Jun then bring his gaze to his wrist watch and start to count how long have passed from the second they leave to Sho’s house before.

Later, his eyes go wider.

“Why I can’t remember what happening afterwards?”

Feeling helpless, Aiba starts to hit his forehead with his palm. His eyes tightly close as he forces his brain to keep thinking. Ohno and Nino only can watch their friend since they also have no idea what they should do.

“There must be something happen in Sho-chan’s house.”

“Stop doing that Aiba-chan.

“Anyway guys, let’s go to my house first. I think I can do something about this.”

Weakly, Jun forces his body to get up. The other three guys turn to him before follow his movement. It takes a lot of effort to ensure their weak legs keep on walking and their brain doesn’t fall asleep. Every time one of them starts to lose balance, the rest will take turn to support until their friend finally recover. Not only the fact that their body suddenly powerless is weird. Even the truth that they can’t find any explanation why they’re sleeping in a park with their white school shirts make it more ridiculous.

Finally after a long torturing walk, they arrive at Matsumoto’s residence. The son of the owner then brings his friend to the back room and stop right in front of a table with test tubes, dropper, chemicals and tablets on it.

“What are we doing here Jun?”

 “I’ll explain it later.”

Jun lean forward to the table before take a deep breath. The three guys turn to silent as they watch their friend grab for a closed beaker with black liquid inside it. With another hand pick a small glass cup, Jun start to pour the unknown liquid on it and in one swift movement swallow it, letting the creepy thing flow through his throat and get inside his digestive system. At first Ohno, Aiba and Nino just keep on observing without saying anything, but when Jun’s hands suddenly trembling badly, they know there’s definitely something wrong with what Jun just drink.

“Jun?”

“Are you okay?”

They start to feel panic when their friend all of sudden kneel down. Jun however just shakes his already sweating head and painfully turn to the others when they already looking at him worriedly beside.

“Follow what I just did. You guys need to take it.”

“After it turns you out like this? You’re risking your life!”

“We must take this or the neurons in our brain will be eaten up.”

“Neurons?”

The chemist tremblingly nods with a whine. Ohno, Aiba and Nino on the other hand look at each other. Finally, they force themselves to get on their feet and do all over again what Jun just did.

One by one of them then fall into half paralyze state. As the first one who drinks the potion, Jun also becomes the first one who slowly recovers from the condition. His breath is still unstable, but bit by bit he finally takes control on his muscles again as well as his memory.

After hours of questioning session, the General Officer finally let all of them to leave the interrogation room. He after all didn’t see any point to hold them there anymore since they already have Sho as their informer and the four guys looked obviously puzzled every time he threw them question.

Nino was looking at his watch when he heard a door not far from their standing place suddenly slammed open.

“Sho!”

Ohno, Aiba and Jun immediately turned to the same direction. They surprised when they saw Sho had been dragged by two soldiers side by side with wet and bleeding face, hanging between half conscious and confused state. His eyes almost closed when they hurriedly tried to approach him.

“Sho!”

“Sho! Can you hear us?!”

“Hang on there!”

Before they could move further to help their friend however, soldiers who’re on guard nearby immediately hold them from moving onwards. They couldn’t do anything anymore but watched Sho was pulled to the end of the interrogation room’s corridor before dragged into the only elevator there. Though they tried their best to make those armies to let go of them, none of it worked even until the elevator’s doors close, brought Sho with the two armful men beside him into the basement.

“What have you done to our friend?!”

The General Officer just snorted.

“I told you guys, it’s a common procedure.”

“By bashing a teenager until half dead?! Are you out of your mind?!”

The man just shrugged. Seeing he was ready to leave them, all the four guys struggled to make themselves free from the tight hold on their arms and body. Soon however they felt something cold touched their neck before sharply had been pushed into their vein.

And everything went dark.

Everything finally becomes clear. Slowly, Aiba moves his hand to his right side neck where he realizes the injection took place.

“…They drugged us. It makes us lost our memory.”

“To be exact, 5 hours ago memory.

“But, how did you know we were injected by something? I mean, the red spot on our neck already explain we were injected, but the drug?”

Jun slowly get on his feet before return his friends’ stare below.

“If you still remembered, I’ve created a drug that made me lost my memory for few hours not long time ago. The symptoms like feel weak and confuse are same with what I’d through before. What we just drink is actually not the cure, but since the side effects are kind of same, it can stabilize the government’s drug from damaging our neurons.”

“Then why we can’t remember anything before?”

“The drug froze our certain neurons. If we waste more time, there’s no way we can get our five hours ago memory back anymore.”

Ohno nods without more words. Right when he takes Nino offering hand to get up, Jun looks at Aiba seriously.

“You see the building’s map, don’t you?”

“Yeah.”

“Great.”

“We need to sneak into there to save Sho as fast as we can. They might kill him if he stays longer there.”

Their conversation abruptly stops when the living room’s phone suddenly rings. Jun quickly runs toward it while the other three start to plan what they’re going to do next.

“Matsumoto residence.”

He says as soon as he picks the call up. Ohno, Aiba and Nino still focus on each other until they see Jun’s frowning face before he suddenly grabs for the television’s remote and switch to news broadcast. This morning protesting demonstration immediately shows on the screen, attracting his other three friends to approach it. They’re focusing on the fighting between government and commoners until Aiba catches the headline which later makes Ohno and Nino’s expression change by it.

“Jun.”

Even though still talking with his uncle on the phone, Jun still turns questioningly to the hacker.

And just like them, his eyes also open wide by the news headline.

“…o.”

The audible same voice makes Sho eventually awake. Stirring, the injured guy forces his body to sit up on his lockup’s floor. His sight was so blurring until he hears someone is calling for his name again.

“Sho!”

Sho looks at the lockup in front him immediately. To his surprise, he found two persons who he was so looking for to see.

“Mom? Dad?”

All wound and bruises left forgotten as he runs to the metal bar of his lockup. His parents also do the same with Mrs. Sakurai is crying gratefully to see her son finally wake up.

Sho on the other hand extremely shock to see them there. If it’s true the government takes them away just for investigating something, why both of them need to be locked like him?

“What happen to you? Who’d done this to you?”

“It’s not important. Why are you here? They suppose to only questioning both of you right?”

The father and mother fall silent for a while. Sho however already can sense the reason judging from their expression.

“They were asking me if I know where dad hid investigation regarding Project Eternity. It must be the same reason why mom and dad stuck in here too right?”

“Wait. They beat you up because of that?”

“Yeah.”

His parents turn to wordless. Just before they feel guiltier, Sho quickly continues.

“We must leave this place. Dad, can’t you contact your people or ask for a lawyer? The government doesn’t have any right to arrest mom and you without enough proof. This kind of procedure is illegal.”

However, Chief Sakurai just sighs.

“No. I must stay here.”

Sho’s eyes grow wider of surprise.

“What-what do you mean?”

The father doesn’t answer it. He just closes his eyes with a deep breath before open it again, looking at his only son with determine look.

“Listen here. I’ll negotiate with them to let you free. Your mom and I are protected by laws so they can’t harm us. But if you’re staying here they can torture you harsher than this. We can’t see they do this to you again.”

“But that’s not explaining why mom and dad must stay here! If the two of you want me to leave, we’ll leave together or I won’t go anywhere!”

“It’s not that easy Sho! The armies are totally loyal with our current government and the commoners outside there only have us, the police and lawyers as their last hope! Till this moment only my workers and your friends’ families are the only people who know about my arrestment! If the government frees me, the press will definitely find out and it’ll lead to war between us and government! I don’t want anyone to lose their life because of this you get it?!”

The son wants to argue about it, but stop when he realizes something.

“Where’re uncles and aunties?”

Chief Sakurai frowns. When he finally absorbs what Sho meant, his expression drastically changes to horror one. Immediately, the father moves his hands to hold tightly the metal bar in front him, causing Sho to taken aback of surprise.

“They’re here?!”

“Yeah. They came here to talk with government people about mom and dad. But there’s demonstration outside this building when they arrived so they got caught.”

Sho frowns more confuse when his parents’ face turn to pale. Panic, the son moves closer with the bar.

“Why? Is there something wrong?”

His question leaves ignore when chief Sakurai just looks to the security camera at the end of the lockups’ corridor.

“ANY OF YOU COME HERE RIGHT NOW! WE NEED TO TALK!”

His shout echoes inside there. Sho however just frowns. He turns to his mother to ask about it but before he could say something, the only exit door in there suddenly slammed open from outside. He only can grit his teeth hardly when he realizes it is the General Officer who becomes the reason why he had been separated from his friends before.

For a while, the lockups’ space remains silent until the high rank man stops in front Mr. and Mrs. Sakurai’s cell.

“So, you decide to tell us, Sakurai-san?”

“Let the four couples you arrested this morning free. They’re here only to help me.”

However, the other one just sniggers. It really pisses Sho off, but he only can tighten his grip around the bar in front him. Soon, he sees the annoying man harshly grip on his father’s shirt and pull closer toward him with a smug smile.

“HEY!”

“You better open your mouth NOW.”

Chief Sakurai just keep his mouth shut, yet still returning his enemy’s stare without glimpse of fear. The General Officer immediately raises up his fist to punch the other one, but stops when the bright light there suddenly change to bloody red dim, follow by a high-pitched siren. ‘Level 5 intruders’ warn suddenly echoes and repeating again and again from the speakers inside the entire building. Angrily, he pulls his hand away from Chief Sakurai before walks as fast as he can toward the only door out there. He however stops when two soldiers who’re equipped with full protection suddenly get inside.

“What was going on?! How come anyone can trespass here and even the level 5 one?! What all of you did when -!”

However, his was ignored when one of the gasmask soldiers just walks away to an empty lockup nearby. The soldier then lifts a chair that he found there, putting it under the only surveillance camera on the corridor before climbs it up and does something there. Feel offend by it, the Officer almost shout the other one but frowns when another soldier there suddenly approaches him. Calmly then the soldier reaches out a small bottle to the high rank man’s face and sprays him with something. It looks quite effective since the Officer suddenly sneezes before immediately falls onto floor in completely unconscious state. Seeing that, the soldier carefully kneels down to check for the high rank man’s situation and clothes. He only looks up again when his ally finally jumps down from the chair later.

“I’d disconnected it.”

“Great. Can you unlock the ID detector too? It seems he doesn’t bring any card with him.”

Jun says while shoving his spray into a pouch on his hip. Ohno meanwhile moves to the ID lock which is the only access for open or close Sho’s lockup. The moment he takes out his newly modify screwdriver, Sho runs closer to his friend and watch confusedly behind the bar. Jun at the same time finally realizes about Chief Sakurai and his wife presence along with them there.

“Why? I thought the government just…?”

An obvious frown shows on his face when he approaches the couple.

“It’s a long story Jun. How did you guys managed to get inside here?”

“To make it short Jun found a way to stabilize the government’s drug. We used the magnetic field detector free car that I’d modified to go here. Masaki drove and led the way and Nino hack this building’s security system.”

The Sakurai family turns to speechless for a while, completely surprise by the guys’ braveness. Finally, Chief Sakurai chuckles with a head shake.

“It’s really like you guys.”

“Eh?”

“I’m sorry. I don’t mean to make you confuse. But for now, I beg you and Satoshi to bring Sho away from here.”

“We will. That’s why we break into here after all. Please wait for a while and Satoshi will unlock both of you from here too.”

Mrs. Sakurai however just shakes her head.

“We entrust him to you guys. We’ll be doing fine here, so don’t worry.”

“If mom and dad so worry about me, why don’t just give the Project Eternity’s information that you’ve been hiding all this time? By this way the government won’t injure any of us and we can use it as exchange for their mom and dad as well.”

The mention of their parents make Ohno’s fingers immediately freezes. Jun’s breathe also somehow stop by Sho’s words, but he still keep a calm face.

“They won’t let go any of us either way. Project Eternity is not like what you think.”

A clank sound suddenly comes from Ohno’s standing place. The mechanic then calmly attaches the detector box with its lid back, producing a beep sound from it when Sho’s lockup finally moves open. Immediately, Sho runs toward his parents’ cell before turn to his friends behind.

“Satoshi. Please unlock their cell too.”

Ohno nods immediately. When he stops right in front the cell’s ID detector however, Chief Sakurai suddenly stops him.

“Just go. If you guys got caught, your parents will be in big trouble.”

“…They already are.”

Both Mr. and Mrs. Sakurai look at Jun in disbelief. Sho on the other hand frowns by Jun’s words.

“Did the government already announce…something?”

Mrs. Sakurai tremblingly asks. Ohno meanwhile chews his lower lip and sigh heavily.

“We saw in television before that our parents were suspected have something to do with the demonstration. Death punishment already decides for them.

Something hard feels like suddenly punch Sho’s chest by it. He now becomes completely speechless. Why the government can easily decide to take someone life just like that? Ohno, Aiba, Nino and Jun now are going to lose their parents because of them. Meanwhile on Chief Sakurai’s situation, he only can swallow hardly while looking at Ohno and Jun guiltily.

“Satoshi, Jun, I promise I’ll make sure you guys’ mom and dad safely leave this place. Quick, get out from here before it’s too late.”

“No. We can’t do that. We can’t just leave both of you here.”

“I’ll figure out other way later. And about your parents, just trust me.”

Jun wants to argue about it, but stops when Ohno suddenly pats his shoulder. From the calm look, he knows it’ll only mean one thing - Chief Sakurai knows what he’s doing. Then, he sighs.

“Fine.”

“But-”

“Nino is hijacking this building security’s system now. He only gives us 25 minutes so it is if better we leave now like your father said.”

Sho couldn’t say anything anymore. Ohno meanwhile immediately shoves out something like aluminum raincoat from his pouch and use it to cover Sho’s entire body. Both guys then drag their friend from here until Jun suddenly stops behind the exit door. As he turns around, he gives entrust look to Chief Sakurai.

“For Sho’s sake, we beg both of you to leave this place safely too. Satoshi and I really don’t want to leave uncle and auntie in this state but…that’ll only make things getting harder for you to handle right?”

The father nods.

“Thank you for understand our situation, Jun.”

Jun however just sigh. No matter what, he doesn’t want to leave Sho’s parents as well as their savior behind. And he knows the rest also think the same thing like him. After all, he, Ohno, Aiba and Nino owe them their life.

But, they have no choice.

“And about our parents, we’ll count on you, Sakurai-san.”

The older man nods with reassure smile. After glance to his father and mother for the last time, Sho quickly follows his friends to escape the lockup’s floor as fast as they can.

XXXXXX-XX-XXXX

At the same time inside the government’s back secret tunnel, Nino is waiting for his best friends to come there. Beads of sweat start to flow down from his temple as he tries his best to type very long codes and passwords to return and solve endless chains of virus that have been send to his laptop’s system. Sometimes he flinches when he hears loud sound of yelling and numerous of boots stomping from the end of the long tunnel. He will be in a really deep trouble if any of government people come there considering that he doesn’t wear any disguise what more he’s in charge on protecting their only way out from there, a magnetic field detector free black car that they brought from Ohno’s house.

“Where are they?”

The hacker mumbles to himself while trying his best to focus on the screen in front him. His fingers feel like almost cramp. Even his heart thumps really hard against his chest, mixing of worry and panic. If this situation goes on he can’t guarantee he can control the building security system anymore.

“I can’t believe I’m hacking government’s system right in their territory.”

He snorts when another virus suddenly attacks his system.

“Hacking? So you’re the mastermind of this fuss?”

A sudden rough voice from behind startles him. He quickly turns around, hugging his laptop close to his chest. Cold sweats wet his pale cheek as he tries to keep his distance from the uninvited speaker.

“Oh, crap.”

His eyes grow wider as soon as he realizes who the man is. Right in front he is a gasmask army with several inches scar on forehead and steadily approaching him.

“How come a small rat like you able to sneak inside here and even crashes one of the most complicated systems in Japan?”

Nino however just keeps his mouth shuts. He moves aback for every step the soldier takes until he notices the other one moves his hand to grab for the rifle on his back.

“Unless…”

All of sudden, someone suddenly jump on the soldier from left, causing the dangerous army to fall on the hard floor under them. Nino who still surprise by the sudden save only silently watches the helper struggling to stop the dangerous man from taking off his rifle. Angry by it, the army immediately grips on the other one goggle before strip it off. Half of the other one face finally uncover, stunning Nino who finally know who the helper is.

“Don’t stop! I’ll delay him!”

‘Aiba-chan?

The hacker thought before quickly shifts his gaze to his laptop again. He immediately lost within the endless codes again while Aiba push, kick or do anything he can to prevent the soldier from injures any of them. Beyond his realization, their vigorous struggle makes something that he look for inside the building while ago to bit by bit slip from the pouch on his hip. A soft thud sound comes from under him the moment he finally notices it.

“Tsk-!”

“LOOK OUT!”

However, a very strong kick already hit his stomach. Aiba immediately been throw aback and falls hardly on the ground. Nino quickly runs to him and help the other one to sit up. Soon, they hear the soldier unlock his gun.

“What a useless struggle.”

Both Aiba and Nino just grit their teeth. Yet, the thing that they want to hide most comes out from the soldier above them.

“You guys are special kids right?”
