Chapter 4
“You guys are special kids right?”
Both Aiba and Nino freeze. Even their breath stops, afraid that the dangerous man could detect the answer from every breath they take
“So you’re hacker? What about the rat beside you?”
The two of them still stay quiet.
The soldier on the other hand starts to approach them. He watches the two guys in front him turn to pale before his hand move to his gasmask. Right before he tries to get rid of it, he notices their retina suddenly open wider. Finally realize there’s sound of footsteps behind him, the soldier swiftly spin around but only greet by some amount of electric shock to his entire body.
Immediately, he falls unconsciously to floor under him. The two young witnesses meanwhile taken aback when seeing the army faint in front them. As their eyes move back to the person who’s holding a stun gun behind the motionless body, they cautiously shift backward.
“What? Why?”
“Who are you?”
Aiba asks while covering Nino behind him to protect the laptop in the other one hand from get caught up again. Yet, the standing man in front them just smiles. Looking by the white lab coat and ID pass around his neck, they realize he’s one of the government workers in the building. Soon, the two of them startle by a sudden beeping sound from Nino’s laptop.
“You’re hijacking the system right? Go on. It’ll turn out bad for you guys if the government’s hackers got the system back.”
Nino immediately put his laptop on floor and kneels down to continue with his job as he knows it’s useless to hide about his ability anymore. Aiba on the other hand protectively stands between them.
“Please don’t be like that, young man. I’m on your side.”
His statement makes both guys frown. After shove his stun gun back into his white coat’s pocket, he return their gaze again.
“Like you guys notice, I’m one of the scientists in this building. I’m working under government, but that doesn’t mean I support them.”
“What do you mean?”
The older man smile sadly. As he takes a long breath, he looks at the two guys in front him again.
“I’m already working here even before Project Eternity exists. Although the current Prime Minister pay more attention to us compared to the previous one, I believe his intention is just for his own benefit. He has secret agenda why he wants to accomplish this Project. And…he doesn’t care how it’s going to affect others especially…special kids like the two of you.”
However, Nino just snorts without looking up.
“You think we’re going to trust you just like that? Come on. If 15 years ago you think the same thing, the misery you just mentioned will never happen.”
“I tried. But the armies and his powerful people threat us. We have no choice or they’ll bring harm to us and our family.”
“So, what do you want from us?”
Aiba still replies him with cold tone while take off his gasmask. The scientist meanwhile sighs.
“I want we cooperate so we can destroy him and the government under his rule. I understand that you guys want to live like normal teens out there too. Besides, what is waiting your parents ahead if they got caught hiding you is a really terrible matter right?”
“You’re too late already. The punishment already decided for them.”
The older one frowns. But when he finally gets what Nino meant, his expression change to determine one.
“Your parents are among the four couples?”
“So what?”
“How about I help to save them to prove that you can trust me?”
His words gain surprise look from the two guys. Neither Aiba nor Nino could say anything by the offer. Upon they realize the risk of trusting someone who’s working under the government, they don’t want to lose their parents because of the government’s selfishness as well. For a while, the two geniuses just stare each other faces, looking for the best choice they should decide.
“I can help you guys. I know this building and the schedules pretty well. Even if there’s something happen, I can protect you. I can’t see any kids like both of you suffer and lost their guardian anymore. That man already makes too much innocent life suffer. He takes other people life lightly like he’s a God but the truth he’s just one of corrupt devil!”
The man angrily shout while tightly clench his fist. Aiba and Nino on the other hand just stare him quietly. Soon, they hear numerous footsteps come from where they entered.
“Hide now!”
The two best friends hurriedly get inside their car when the scientist turns to the numbers of approaching armies who are coming from the tunnel’s end. They could feel their heart thump hardly against their chest, worry if the man indeed a loyal government’s follower. And if that so, they might get busted and it’ll be the end for the five of them.
Yet, something they don’t expect leaves the scientist’s mouth.
“Two insurgents just enter this building while ago! Hurry up!”
Hearing his panic and worry shout, the army troupe swiftly run toward the only building back’s way in. Fortunately, they don’t bother with the presence of Ohno’s father black car there and just run pass beside it. Aiba and Nino meanwhile surprise to find out the man is really helping them, but when the old scientist’s words repeat on their head again, Nino finally realize what it will lead to. Quickly, he shows up from the back passenger seats’ window.
“My friends are going to meet them!”
The older man turns to him in surprise.
“You guys have more friends inside here?”
“There’re 3 of them! I think they’re heading here now!”
“Wait! I’ll try to contact them!”
Aiba moves his hand to his earpiece immediately. In case Ohno and Jun lost inside the building, he and the other two decide to wear it so they’ll able to contact each other for emergency matter. As the cheerful guy finally can hear Jun’s voice, he sees the old scientist suddenly offers his hand to him.
“Let me talk with your friends. I’ll tell them another secret route to this door.”
Quickly, Aiba takes off his earpiece device. His hand however suddenly stops when he almost gives the small thing to the older one.
“Aiba-chan?”
Nino frowns by his friend weird act. Aiba at the same time immediately jerk up from his thought.
“Sorry, I’ll-”
However, the hacker moves faster by grips his wrist.
“You feel something wrong again?”
Before Aiba could answer it, the scientist already picks the device from his hand.
“Leave the rest to me.”
The man say while attach the device to his ear. Aiba and Nino only can nod before turn to the building’s entrance, worry with Ohno, Sho and Jun current situation.

For the fourth time after leaving the lockup basement, Sho almost tripped on floor. His other two friends realize that he’s not in a good state for walk just looking by the several wounds on his body, but due Sho’s stubbornness to move without their help, they let him be. With dim red warning light brightening their path, loud siren to hide their footsteps’ sound and aluminum infrared resistant covering Sho’s body, at least it can reassure them that they wouldn’t get caught before they reach the tunnel. Just when they exactly on their half way to where their two friends are waiting at, Ohno suddenly stops.
“What’s wrong?”
“I hear something.”
Both Sho and Jun stare back the gloomy corridor in front them. Later, Ohno and Jun surprise by Aiba’s sudden voice on their earpiece.
“We’re almost out. Did you found what you’re looking for already?”
The chemist quickly answers after move his hand to certain button on the device. Yet, he and Ohno confusedly turn to each other when they hear their friends are talking with someone. Soon, unrecognizable voice comes into their ears.
-“Follow the direction I’ll give. Guards are moving to your place. You guys can’t use the first floor’s door to tunnel anymore.”
“What?”
Sound of boots stomping gradually becomes clear from behind the automatic door meters ahead them. The three guys don’t waste any more time for questioning and immediately head back from there like what they’d told to. With directions given by the scientist to follow, they run from one section to another one since it seems the soldiers already notice Sho’s presence.
Right when they arrive at some corridor with numbers of observation windows beside them, Sho finally reaches his limit. He almost falls on his knees, but his friends manage to catch him on time.
“Are you sure this corridor will bring us to our friends? Who are you by the way?”
Jun asks between his breathe. While supporting Sho, he and Ohno keep on moving while looking at the numerous of large windows on their right and left.
-“I’m on your side. I’ll help you and your friends here escape.”
“What? Who? Don’t tell me you’re under government.”
-“Indeed I am but-”
“What have you done to my friends then?! Let me talk to them!”
Ohno at the same time doesn’t say anything and just listen to them. Of course he feels worry with Aiba and Nino’s situation too, but Jun is more reliable when it comes to handle with this stuff.
The three guys then move deeper into the gloom corridor, walk past every window there until Ohno realizes that one of the large glasses on his side has its light turn on. It unknowingly makes his heart thumping hard as the distance between them and the observation window gradually becomes shorter. The moment he finally stands side by side with it, he surprises by what he sees inside there.
“Mom! Dad!”
If it wasn’t because he remembers Sho is holding on him, he must be already running closer to the mirror. His shout make Sho immediately turn to the same direction follow by Jun.
“Aunties? Uncles? Why are they here?”
Ohno and Jun clumsily take off their goggle and gasmask before move closer to the glass with Sho. They hit the glass, shout and scream as loud as they can but none of the parents inside there seems notice it. Their parents are either talking to each other or sitting side by side while crying. Watching them have been locked inside the empty and white room, the guys can feel angriness bubbling inside them.
“Mom! Dad! Can you hear us?!”
He tries to get the other side’s attention again. Yet, the soundproof window doesn’t let it.
-“You guys’ mom and dad are there? I thought they had been move to other building.”
“Tell me how we can free them from there.”
-“No! You guys must leave there NOW! You have no time anymore! I’ll help you to free them later!”
Jun harshly snorts.
“There’s no way we’re going to leave them like this! Give the earpiece back to my friend! I want to talk with him!”
-“Like I said, you’re running of time! Leave-”
Someone however snatch it from the old scientist.
-“What’s going on there?”
“Nino! We found them!”
-“Them? You mean our parents?”
“Yeah. But maybe we need to find other route to unlock their door.”
He hears the hacker heavy sigh. The line suddenly falls into silent which Jun realizes that Nino perhaps is thinking about something.
-“...I must tell you the truth. I don’t think I can control their system anymore. My laptop is hanged. They’ve sent me too many viruses, so I can’t access to almost their entire system anymore.”
Ohno and Jun feel like their hearts are going to sink. They then immediately turn to their parents who are sitting inside the room again. It’s not like they don’t believe with Chief Sakurai’s promise, but maybe if they solve this matter by themselves, at least it can lessen Sho’s parents burden a bit.
Finally, Ohno gives a trembling answer.
“Fine. We’re going there.”
It’s a really hard decision, but they’re not on right place to complain. Just when they’re starting to move, they hear the earpiece change hands again before the old scientist’s voice appears again.
-“Since you guys are stubborn, fine. There’s QR security code on the left window’s side four meters ahead you guys. Unless you able to break it, a wall which lead to the door wouldn’t open.”
Quickly, they walk to the place where they man had mention before and stop. Now, they’re torn whether to leave or stay.
-“Do what you think you won’t regret with.”
The man’s words somehow leave a deep impact on Ohno and Jun. Sho who doesn’t know what is exactly happen and only can depends on them to move, just watch their face wonderingly. He realizes his friends’ expression seems full of hesitant.
“Guys, we should go.”
-“Your parents are there so you guys have a right to decide what you should do.”
“It’s true but…”
Ohno couldn’t finish his words, but turn around to where their parents are. He knows Jun is also thinking about the same thing as him; whether they’re making a right decision or not.
“Guys.”
Sho worriedly persuades them to move.
Finally, Jun sighs and closes his eyes tightly. As he open it back and turn to Ohno, he found the other one nods at him. Both guys then immediately move forward at a same time while still supporting Sho with their shoulder. They able to take few steps forward, but the worst thing they don’t want to face happen right after that.
All of sudden, the entire building’s lights turn on back and siren all of sudden stops.
“Oh, shoot.”
“We need to move faster.”
Unfortunately, they could hear dozens pair of footsteps are already coming from behind them.
“There they are!”
Without turning around, the three guys run with all their might from there. No matter how many times those men warn them to stop they just ignore it despite their difficultness to move since Sho still needs some support to run. Soon, they see the metal wall which supposes to block their way suddenly move up, showing their friends who are already waiting for them outside.
“Guys!”
Immediately, Aiba stormed inside the building to help them. Nino meanwhile stay on where he’s standing at to see if anyone will come there as well as to protect the car which is their only way to escape. The hacker only can watch anxiously as his friends now are approaching him from outside. The moment they almost few steps from the metal door, he catches sound of something in high speed is coming there. Trying to find out what it is, he quickly takes a glance to the tunnel’s entrance but to his surprise, he found a full speed bazooka round is coming there. Clumsily, he jumps toward his friends before push them hardly to fall under him.
“Nino! What-!”
A loud explosion shakes the entire basement floor. Huge blaze follow soon, send the five guys into shock state. If they stay closer with the car anymore, perhaps they might lose their hearing sense. Even armed men who follow them immediately stop by it. They for a while remain in a same position until Sho manages to use his brain properly.
“We need to get out from here.”
He painfully uses his elbows to push himself up follow by Jun beside. Nino however just stays motionless on them.
“Hey, Nino.”
The chemist tries to wake his friend up by shakes the other one body. Seeing the hacker still unmoving, Jun moves his palm to touch the latter’s back. Later, he forces himself to sit up with Nino in his arms when he feels there’s something moist on his hand.
“Blood?”
If the armies behind them aren’t making any noise, they probably will still freeze on the floor. Yet, they somehow still manage to quickly get up with Aiba carry their unconscious friend on back and the other three give a final push to themselves to run toward the other long tunnel’s end when the entrance already crowd with gasmask soldiers. Since only Aiba knows the detail route there, he’s the one who in charge to lead the way while the rest follow him behind.
“Masaki. Is there any possible way out than the entrance we used before?”
Sho ask while exhaustedly try to endure his pain. Aiba meanwhile chews lip thoughtfully while trying to speed up.
“From what I’ve seen, this place surrounds with prison fence-like. The only way in and out for outsider is the main gate which we used before. They must be having another route for government workers but since we were blindfolded before, I’m not sure where it is. Unless…”
The three guys behind him frowningly wait for him to continue.
“…you guys gave me time to move around here for a while. Maybe I can remember something.”
“No. We must stick together even if it means we’ll get caught.”
They then surprise by a sudden gunshot from behind. It fails to injure any of them, but hit one of huge and endless metal pipes on ceiling. Immediately, all of them take a quick look at behind and surprise to found that they’re now chased by huge numbers of men with rifle. As they turn to the front again, Ohno gives out a harsh sigh.
“I can’t believe they’re trying to kill us for only a stupid project! What they thought life actually is?!”
“The government surely hides something from us. Now that reminds me. Where’s the government man with you guys before?”
Aiba frowns. He then quickly take a glance behind, surprise to see the man is nowhere for he doesn’t know how long. Soon, they safely come out from the endless tunnel. 10 steps later however, Sho finally couldn’t bear with his pain anymore and collapse to the ground.
“Sho!”
The other three abruptly stop their track. Ohno quickly move to pull up Sho with him before they hear sound of unlocking guns from inside the tunnel.
“SHOOT THEM!”
The armies however startle when another explosion happens to the burning car in front them. The huge blaze then makes contact with leaking gas pipe on the ceiling, causing the tunnel to immediately catch in fire. Immediately, an extremely huge explosion occurs inside there and throws the five guys strongly aback by the impact. The moment they want get up from asphalt under them, they shock when one follow by another explosion spread from the bottom to the upper floor of the building just in mere second.
None of Ohno, Aiba and Jun who witness it says anything on that moment. They just sit on the ground, completely unable to process anything with their brain due the horrible scene they just seen.
However, that’s not what their mind is occupied with.
“Mom, dad.”
Aiba feels like his heart suddenly stops beating. Even Ohno and Jun who always know what they should do and think in any situation only can remain motionless beside him.
“No way. Our mom and dad are still…inside.”
Aiba all of sudden rush toward the blaze. Fortunately his friends catch his arms on time or the cheerful guy’s body must be already burned when another fire explosion happens on the tunnel’s entrance.
“Aiba-chan, you can’t get inside. It’s too dangerous.”
“But-But what if they still-”
He couldn’t finish his words when Jun’s grip suddenly feels tighter.
“It’s too late. They’re gone.”
“But Jun-!”
“Get hold of yourself Masaki!”
His shout surprise both Aiba and Ohno. Under the fire, they could see Jun’s eyes brim with tears as he grits hardly his teeth.
“Don’t make me say it again.”
“Jun…”
None of them could say anything anymore after that.
Soon, Ohno turn to look at the burning building in front them again. Despite of his still shock state, he also wondering why nobody come to look from them anymore looking by how desperate the soldiers want to kill them before. Plus, isn’t the building is the government’s headquarters? Why no secret agency or firemen try to put down the fire?
“…How many lives they want to destroy anymore?”
He tightens his fist. Aiba and Jun meanwhile couldn’t say anything anymore. Tears start to flow down to their face as they watch the big fire bring the government loyal dogs along with their lovely parents.
