“Good morning.”
He greeted the old lady politely as he didn’t want her to think wrong of him. After all, he now is really close with her granddaughter already.
“Your face showed black sign.”
“Eh?”
“Don’t come near with my grandchild anymore. You’ll only curse her.”
With that, she took her leave. Ohno on the other hand didn’t reply her and slowly stepped away from the resident. He actually already heard about it as the sister of his only friend always came to told him the same thing. At first, he was curious with it and wanted to ask for an explanation, but when he found out that the old lady was a fortune-teller, he choose to keep the question silence. Besides, he knew that he wasn’t suit with the old lady’s granddaughter as the feelings that he needed to hold back wasn’t a feeling that a friend should had, what more a brother.
All of sudden, the place surround with a lot of applauses sound. Slowly, Aiba opens his eyes and saw a guy is crouching down in front him with a worried looking on his face. Seems, the guy just saved his life.
“W-Why?”
He confusedly looks at the saviour of him in front. The man was damp with sweat and still panting; showing that he just running from a far place.
BEEP!
Both of them immediately look at the phone in Aiba’s grip.
“Like I expected, you’re one of them.”
Wonderingly, the still confused guy just returns the Ohno's pair of concern eyes before finally recalled where they have met before.
“You’re the guy in that hospital before right?”
The other one nods and smiles gratefully.
“I’m glad you’re still alive.”
’10.30 pm...’
Almost 12 hour passed since the first attacked. Sho however still keeps glance to his back for the uncounted time.
‘I should be happy rather than wondering instead...’
As he looks at the front again, he gives out a sigh and massages gently his neck. Though the pain already fade away, the redden line is still there. Just when he walks into a tunnel, he got a Goosebumps by a sight of a fortune-teller’s stall in front him. The fortune-teller on the other hand just keep staring at him from the time he passed her until he finally lost from her sight.
‘Creepy! Why she just staring at me...’
A relief sigh comes out when he finally heard sound of vehicles from outside again. Unexpectedly, he feels a tap on his shoulder that abruptly makes him stop.
“Y-Yes...?”
Sho steps aback when he saw the fortune-teller lady is now stood behind him. Terrified by it, he swallows hardly.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t want to do any fortune-telling Obaa-sama.”
“Was there something bad happen to you recently?”
He frowns. Realizing it maybe the fortune-teller’s tactic to come to her stall, he tries to refuse it indirectly.
“No. Not at all.”
The old lady however still observes him worriedly.
“Show me your hand.”
She already gives out her hand, demanding Sakurai to show her his palm. Hesitantly, the guy finally gave up on her request. For few seconds, the fortune-teller just observes his palm with frowns which makes Sho totally feels worried by it.
“Black sign.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Seems your death is getting near.”
The young man widens his eyes.
“I-I see...”
Slowly, he pulls his hand from the lady grips and continues to walk away from there.
“Wait, young man.”
He stops.
“We can change some of our fate. I might be wrong, you know.”
“No, Obaa-sama. You might be right.”
The fortune-teller sighs. Immediately, she takes out a piece of paper and writes down something on it. She then places it on Sho’s palm.
“My granddaughter maybe can help you. Just call this number when you think you have no way out anymore.”
With a smile, she left Sho dumfounded alone. Sho on the other hand just watches the lady lost from his sight before bring his gaze back to the paper given.
Few hours already passed. Nino however still quietly observes the beauty cherry blossom tree outside of his ward’s window. His room now is almost in a pitch dark state and only brighten by the moonlight. As careful as he can, his hand reaches for the bandages that wrapping almost half of his left face before sits up on his bed side.
‘At least, I’m still alive.’
He bites his lower lip and takes a deep inhaled. After gets up from his bed, he takes off the patient cloth on his body and moves toward the cloths that his roommate just brought or him before. He was about to put it on when he notices something on his right radial.
‘What is this?’
He tries to rubs it away, but the red fire mark still didn’t vanish away at all.
‘Well, never mind.’
Ignoring it, he immediately puts on his shirt. He then tiptoed toward the door carefully; hoping the nurses will not realizing that he wasn’t sleep yet. As he manages to get out from his ward and almost reaches the entrance door, he immediately rushes into the yard.
‘Free!’
With a big smile, he inhales the fresh air outside into his lungs. From his standing spot, he clearly can sees someone is leaning on the cheery blossom tree few metres in front him, but considering that guy maybe just wanted some time for relax like him, he just calmly walks away.
“You can survive if you stay together.”
Abruptly, the guy’s words make him stops. He however didn’t manage to ask further when a strong icy wind all of sudden blown that forces him to tightly closes his eyes. Few seconds later, the strong wind finally stops and he immediately brings his head up to the guy’s place.
‘Eh? Where’s he?’
Immediately, he looks for the guy’s presence there as he knew it is impossible for a human to disappear like that just in a mere of second. He was about to approach the cherry blossom tree that the guy was stood under before, but stop when something suddenly feels like burning his wrist. With a painful cry, Nino kneels down on the ground and clumsily pulls up his sleeve. The sight of his wrist however couldn’t help but makes him freeze on the spot.
‘H-How come...?’
The mark now already spread from his radial and covering half of his wrist.
As he feels his back almost cramp because of too long lying on the patient’s bed, Jun carefully sits up on it and stares on his sleeping sister beside. To be honest, he is actually bored and lonely without someone to talk to but as he realizes how tired his sister is, he finally chooses to let her sleep and heads out from the ward alone. After few steps walking on the winding corridor, he finally bumps into a group of nurses and doctors who are seriously discussing about something with their worried faces.
‘Well none of my business.’
Completely ignores it, he continues to steps into the gents. As soon as he enters it, he immediately moves to close the door, but stops when he felt something hot around is spreading on his wrist. Couldn’t bear with the pain anymore he clumsily rolls up his sleeve without realizing an old man is coming out from one of the cubicles there.
“A curse...”
“What?”
Jun frowns by his words. The man however just tremblingly points at the fire mark on his wrist and back off.
“You’d got the curse!”
“What are you-?”
He stops when the fire mark suddenly spread from his radial to his right wrist in front of his eyes. Immediately, he looks up and clumsily tries to approach the old man before.
“What does this mean?”
However, the man just hurriedly steps back with a terrified look.
“Don’t come closer! You’ll kill me!”
“What are you talking about?!”
“Don’t touch me!”
He immediately slaps Jun’s hand away and washes his hand worriedly on the sink. Losing his patience, Jun harshly grabs the old man cloth and shoots a death glare.
“Calm down now and explain me to me about this!”
Without looking or listening on the young man, the older one however just trying his best to escape from the strong grips until his back hardly been stomped on the wall behind.
“Explain it, NOW.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
‘Finished!’
After pushed the ‘sent’ button, Sho flipped off his phone and shoves it back into his pocket. Slowly, he walks back to his apartment; vowing to take a bath, watching funny television show and have a nice long sleep till tomorrow evening. He didn’t expect any reply from the fortune-teller’s granddaughter at all as he believes the message from the Shinigami was nothing but a prank OR coincidence. His wristwatch shows almost 12 am when he reaches his house and found the door was left open.
‘Did I forget to lock it?’
A sudden loud crash from inside attract him to get into his house immediately.
“What the...?”
He widens his eyes when files, books and paperwork mess all around the living room. Even his photo frames with his high school and colleagues friends are cracking on the floor. He almost grabs for something nearby to be use as a weapon before someone suddenly slams open his bedroom’s door.
“WHO ARE YOU?!!”
No answer from the black mask man. Slowly, Sho took few steps aback when the man comes out from his room and took something from under his jacket.
ZAP!
A knife all of sudden flew just few inches from Sho’s head. Sho could feel his breath suddenly turns to irregular when he finally realizes how sharp the weapon is until it could attach on the wall behind him. The attacker however, didn’t gives his victim a space for get ready at all and immediately speed up toward Sho with a blade in his hand.
‘CRAP!’
As fast as he can, Sho clumsily finds a cover his three seats sofa nearby. He could hear thousand of sharp throbs behind him; proving how closes him with the killer blade. All of sudden, the attacker jumps out and landed right in front his face. The last thing Sho saw only a hunger shining blade that readily slashes him apart above.
After answered the nurse’s question with a shook, Nino calmly walks passed her and heads back to his room. The hospital looks a bit chaos as the doctor just found out one of their patients was escape from there.
‘Maybe I should sleep now...’
With a wide yawn, he heads back into his room. As he almost approaches the door to get into his room, he saw a little girl is passing him with a red ball in her hand. Of course his mind wonder why the little girl still not sleeping yet, but as he was too tired to functions his brain again, he just tiredly reaches for the door’s knob and readily to open it.
“Want to play with me Ni-chan?”
He stops. While swallows hardly, he bring his eyes to below him and saw the little girl now is gripping on his shirt tightly. Obviously, a normal kid will never ever ask that question in the middle of night, what more to someone that barely knows.
“I-I’m sorry, but I’m a bit tired.”
The little girl just pouts.
“Okay...”
She let go of him and starts to walk away from there. While tries to regulate his breath and heartbeat back, Nino just watch the girl takes her leave away from there. He almost brings his body back to face his ward’s door when his mouth suddenly moves by itself.
“Wait.”
A hard thump thunders inside Nino’s chest. Slowly, the little girl turns around to him.
“I think I can...but just for a wh-”
Forcefully, he moves his hand to cover his mouth. Cold sweat flows to his cheek as he completely feels lost with what just happen to his body. Immediately, he moves to storm into his room, but stop when he realizes the little girl now already holds his other hand.
“Let’s play on rooftop ne, Ni-chan?”
“You already promise me right Jun?”
Jun however just crossing his arms with his back leans on the wall behind him. Feel tired with the never ending question, he immediately straights up and starts to walk away from the corridor.
“Jun! I’m not finish yet!”
With a smirk, the younger brother just stuck his tongue out and continues to leave her behind. Sometimes, he feels extremely irritated with his sister’s lack of reasons worry whenever she found out that he was involved in any fight like before. He admits that used a wrong way to ask that old man for an explanation from him, but at least he didn’t left any scar or bruises on that man’s body at all.
‘What a miserable day.’
A snort comes out between his lips. Calmly, he leads his steps to the rooftop and starts to climb up the stairs one by one. Sounds of his footsteps echoed along his way until he finally reaches the door that will connect him with the rooftop. As he reaches the door knob, he immediately turns and pushes to open the door. He was about to steps outside when an unwanted sight comes into his eyes.
‘Don’t tell me…’
He freezes when he saw a guy with bandaged eye is standing on the rooftop’s side. Aiming to pull the guy down from there, Jun silently tiptoed to him but immediately stops when the guy suddenly turns around and looks at him. Knowing that he has no choice anymore, Jun just continue to approach him.
“It’s dangerous to stand there, dude. Come here.”
He said as he worriedly reaches his hand out. The guy however just ignored him and continues to stare under the building back.
“I-I don’t know what was happen to you, but commit suicide is not a good way.”
No answer. That’s when Jun finally realizes the existence of a little girl beside the other guy.
“Let’s go ne?”
She said while tightly hold hand with the bandaged guy. The guy on the other hand just nods emptily, makes Jun immediately runs forward toward them.
“NO!”
Worriedly, Aiba rubs both his palms under the coffee table while his eyes roaming for every part of the midnight café. He has no idea what did comes into his mind when he accept the stranger’s invitation to stay with him back then even though he knows it’s already too late to regret it now.
“Here.”
Aiba just nods hesitantly when his saviour finally comes back with a pair of shoes. After puts it on the coffee house’s floor, Ohno calmly moves to sit on the other side of the table. Silence surrounded them for some mean time before Aiba suddenly gets up from his seat.
“I-I’m sorry, but I-I need to go.”
However, Ohno manages to catch his wrist. Immediately, he pulls Aiba’s shirt sleeves up and let the guy sees the red fire mark on his own wrist.
“You are one of the Shinigami’s victim rights?”
He calmly said it with his eyes never left the other one. Witnessing Aiba’s reaction, he realizes that the guy still didn’t realize about the mark on his wrist and perhaps, still didn’t get about how sadist the ’game’ that he is involving with.
“How did this thing…? I-I never-”
“Have a seat first.”
Gently, Ohno leads him to sit back. Aiba on the other hand just wonderingly looks at him before finally follow his order.
“How did you know I am one of the participated?”
“It’s not participated. You were forced to join it right?”
Nod.
“I know you’re one of the victims because of the mark. When we bumped onto each other before, I accidently saw it on your radial.”
“So you followed me till here?”
He nods.
“Why?”
“To protect you and the others until this game ended.”
Aiba frowns.
“Wait. What do you mean by ‘the others’?”
“25 people were dragged to join this game. You’re one of them.”
“So, will I harm you if you get closer with me?”
“No. I’m already insusceptible with it.”
The numbers of wrinkled on Aiba’s forehead increase. Now, he completely has no idea with Ohno’s words.
“What do you know about this mark?”
“If the symbol was black in colour, means the game already ended for the body’s owner. And if it still red in colour, it means on the other round.”
Hesitantly, Aiba brings his eyes to the mark and stunned by how red the mark looks. All of sudden, the fire mark slowly spread from his radial to the right side wrist, followed by an unbearable hotness sensation on it. Just few of seconds, Aiba’s already damp with sweat as her tries his best to withstand with the painfulness.
“Day two is coming. Calm down.”
Ohno immediately moves beside him and strokes gently the other one’s back. Few seconds later, the burning feelings gradually decrease before slowly disappear. It took a while before Aiba finally manages to regulate his breath again and turns to Ohno behind him.
“...W-What do you mean by day two?”
“When the mark starts to spread, means the next day is coming.”
“So...What does it means?”
“Another attack will come soon. So, we need to get prepared now.”
“Get prepared?”
Aiba just gritted his teeth when Ohno answers him with a nod. Furiously, he places his palms on the table in front them and seriously returns the guy behind him eyes.
“Actually...who are you?”
Ohno however didn’t answer it, but curves with a sad smile.
