“We’re reporting from the accident site. Last night, an explosion occurred in this 24 hours store when a robbery was also coincidently happen here. The explosion was happened exactly on 1.44 am and based on what the witnesses said; 5 people were lost their lives including the robber himself. Up until now the firemen are still looking for the death bodies inside the burnt shop and for now they just found two.”
The site now crowd with people include the reporters and newspapers everywhere.
“Last night, this place was shocked by a sudden loud explosion sound that burnt the whole inner side of this store. The bus driver said that his bus was suddenly out of his control probably because of the sloppy road. He however succeeds to jump out from the bus before the collision and fortunately because of the heavy rain, the fire didn’t spread to the other buildings nearby there. We now-”
The news reporter stops when someone suddenly shouts for the people around there attention.
“I found this bag!”
The fat man in his late 40s tries his best to approach the inspector there. As he passed the economy bag to the man in duty, a guy suddenly rushes closer to them.
“Is my wallet it still inside there?”
“Wallet?”
“We were told to put our stuff inside this bag by the robber last night!”
Listening that, the inspector immediately takes a look inside it. Indeed, the bag was full with wallets, phones and money which makes him widens his eyes in amazement. Curious by it, he turns to face the bag’s founder beside him immediately.
“How did you find this?”
“Over there. I was about to look what was happened here before I found this.”
He explains it while points at the alley about two buildings from there. Hearing the new finding, all the reporters there immediately gather around the inspector. Tons of questions were thrown by them with cameras and flash capturing the man in duty’s face. Everyone was anxious by the news as they follow the inspector to leave the place.
“What do you think about this new founder, Sir?”
“Will you return all things immediately to its owner?”
“Why the bag was left in that alley?”
Immediately, the inspector stops. The reporter was right. Why the bag was found left there with all stuffs still inside it? Hurriedly, he passes the bag to his people beside and rushes to the alley that the founder’s said back then. However, no matter how deep he steps inside the alley, he didn’t see anyone there.
‘Who was-’
He abruptly stops when he saw something inside the trash can there. Step by step, he comes to approach it and frown by the sight of gauze bandage with pile of clothes.
‘Was it probably…’
The witnesses’ explanation about the two guys that might lost their lives in the explosion last night comes into his mind. He now doubt whether the two guys succeed to leave the accident site alive or not.
“Sir.”
Immediately, he turns to look at his worker.
“We’ve found the third body. But there’s no traces for the more two bodies anywhere.”
A creak sound produces when Ohno slowly opens his late parents’ house door. As he pulls it open, he lets Sho and Aiba behind him to enter the house first before he comes to fellow them and closes the door.
“Whose house is this?”
“My parents.”
“Where are they?”
“Already passed away years ago.”
Sho silences by his calm answer. Meanwhile, Aiba just wondering around the living room; observes for every part of the living room that succeeds to get his attention. For a while, the house is as quiet as funeral.
‘…Everything is still in its place.’
Sighting the same position of the furniture and stuffs inside couldn’t help, but gives hesitant feelings deep inside Ohno’s chest. Just if he has another choice than steps inside the full of memory place again, the place will be the last place he wants to enter for his entire life. After all, the family-feelings house was became the main reason why he chooses to move into his already burnt house even though living in his late parents’ house was actually extra comfortable than his single room house.
“Ohno-san?”
He turns to look at Aiba who already stood behind him. Aiba however didn’t say anything, but gesture a rectangular shape with his hand.
“Ah, sorry. I’ll look for the first aid now.”
Immediately, he moves to look for the white box inside the drawers that he thought might be contains it. The actual reason why he brings the two guys there are for treating Sho’s wound since Aiba was worried that it might get any infection if they didn’t change his bandage and treat the wound. After few minutes looking for it with Sho and Aiba helps, they finally found the first aid box and Aiba immediately starts to treat Sho’s wound. Watching the deaf guy movement couldn’t help but makes Ohno wonder if Aiba was a doctor before as he knew the stuffs that they are having now are quite limited since some of the medicine inside the first aid are actually can’t longer be use. On the other hand for Sho, the treatment session almost makes him to pass out. The first time his wound was treated by Aiba he was still in unconscious state so it wasn’t give any affect so much compare to now. He however quite fortunate since Ohno was keep supporting him beside and Aiba at the same time couldn’t hear his whimper and curses or the guy might immediately stop from doing the small surgery on the spot. About 30 minutes later, the treatment finally ended and Sho’s wound was covered again by new bandaged.
“Just have some rest. I’ll be on guard.”
Ohno finally says something after Aiba disappear to the kitchen for washing the bloody clothes that he used to wipe Sho’s blood before. Sho however couldn’t reply anything since he was still tired and weak. Later soon, Aiba enters the living room again and takes Ohno’s injured hand gently. As careful as he can, he opens the piece of cloth that wraps around the other one’s palm; readily wants to check for the wound that cause by the blade last night.
“…Eh?”
The deaf guy frowns. How come there’s nothing even a scratch left on the older guy’s hand anymore?
“Your face looks pale. Go have some rest.”
He said as he pats the other one shoulder before went to the sliding door that connected the living room with the yard. As he opens it, Ohno slowly sits on the wooden floor and leans on the glass door behind him; leaving the still confused Aiba alone inside.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
‘Almost pass 10.’
Sighing, Ohno puts his phone back to the floor beside him. Usually the next attack will take its place at least after 5 hours except if the victim stayed alone. Even though, up till now he still has no idea with what the Shinigami are going to plan next which make him to doubt lot of things at a same time. Will he able to protect Sho and Aiba after this? Is he going meet the other survivors later? Can he bear with the tiredness that he already extremely feels now until day three ended?
‘What should I do…’
Lightly, he knocks his back head on the glass behind him. He realizes that his body already on its limit too. However, no matter how immune and fast recover he is from die because of the game, at least the immunity only works to him and not others. That’s why he didn’t dare to put himself in ease or even to have a short nap since he didn’t want something bad happen to neither Sho nor Aiba.
“Ohno-san?”
Sho tries to speak between the killing pains that he feels. Ohno meanwhile turns around to look at him almost immediately.
“What time is it?”
“Almost 10. Need something?”
Sho just shook his head.
“You should have some rest.”
“No, I’m still fine. You and Aiba-san are the one who need to have some rest now.”
Sho frowns. Then, his eyes caught Aiba is sleeping on the floor.
“Is he okay?”
“I think he is tired since he told me last night that he got the message when he was back from his night shift work.”
“He must be lack of sleep.”
Ohno nods. Soon, he saw Sho finally drift into his sleep again. Quietly, Ohno turns to look at the empty house yard again and leans back on the sliding door behind him. Now somehow, he feels grateful for choose the house for their shelter since the familiar scent could prevent him from fall asleep. After all, the house is too full of unforgettable memories.
Too much of it.
He supposed to have a family who he can rely on, parents who will raise him with full of love and a perfect life like anyone who born in a same year with him. However, everything dramatically changes when his parents involved in a fatal accident right in front his eyes.
He lost everything when he just 18.
Each day he moved from one home to another one when his relatives didn’t want to take care of him, until one day when he finally moved into the most places that he didn’t want to see anymore; their house that he happily lived with his beloved parents not long time ago. Everything was still in its place; television, dine table, his bed, which crushed the young man deeply inside. Desperate to finish his high school, Ohno decided to stay in that house until he graduated. As he rarely talked with anyone, he locked the loneliness he felt till one day when a family came to move next to his home.
“You can leave that here.”
A woman in her 60s said to one of the delivery workers. At the same time, Ohno was locking the door and ready to go to his school. He just quietly watched the newbie before calmly passed them without greeting first.
“Are you staying next to our house?”
Ohno stops and turns to the asker. The girl who was maybe at the same age of him meanwhile just curves with a smile.
“Nice to meet you.”
Shocked by the unexpected greeting, he awkwardly gives her nods before left the neighbour area as fast as he can. The neighbour just blinked confusedly by his acted but finally smiles and ran to help her grandmother and younger sister. After that incident, nothing happened between them at all. Ohno was completely forgotten about it until one week later when he bumped into her at groceries. She was buying ingredients for dinner while Ohno was looking for fast food that he is going to have for his meal that night. None of them says anything and just silently paid for their food. After he reached home, he immediately lay on the couch and did nothing till night finally come so he can boiled his instant noodle like every night.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
Sleepily, he opened his eyes and stretched his body tiredly. He didn’t realize that he was fall asleep until he saw the clock showed almost 8.30 pm. As he heard the door was knocked for the second time, he immediately walked toward the door.
“Good evening!”
And his life change when he decided to open the door. For the first time after his parents dead, he had Oden as his dinner and it was her handmade. That night, he found out that both of them were losing their parents and now she’s living with her grandmother and younger sister which slowly led to the closeness between them. Everything was completely like a new started for Ohno’s life. Her face was the first thing Ohno will see before went to school as she always went to send her grandmother her breakfast at the same time. They were really got along with each other until she succeeds to bring Ohno’s laugh again. If once time there was no one waited for him to come home, now Ohno will found her already sit in front of her house and welcomed him with ‘okaeri!’ and waved. Her grandmother didn’t afford to support both of her granddaughters’ study, so only the youngest one got to enter high school while the older sister will take care of their house. One morning, Ohno was ready to leave his house when he bumped into the old lady who was watering her plants in front of her house.
“Don’t come near with my grandchild anymore. You’ll only curse her.”
Those words always played in his mind after one day he tried to greet the old woman properly. It however still didn’t change anything between him and her eldest granddaughter. About one month later, the two best friends came to spend their time together at their usual place; the green grass field where they can watch trains came and left with the sunset as its background. There, she asked him if they can see each other again at the same time as she had something to tell him.
…However, fate was crueller than what they hoped for.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Don’t come any closer!”
He shouted between the short breaths he had. Worried with any decision that the other one might take, she stayed still immediately. Her heart pounded too much hard inside her chest by the sight of blood, scars and cuts all around Ohno’s body.
“Your family was right. I’m a jinx.”
“That’s not true!”
With her already teary eyes, she approached the other one before stopped and knelt right beside him.
“You’ll survive. Trust me.”
“…I don’t think I can stand with this anymore. It’s hopeless.”
“There’s still a hope if you don’t give up! I promise that I will do anything I could for you!”
“But for how long?! I’ve already run out of energy and this is-this is just…”
He couldn’t finish his words when the image of his parents’ fatal death came into his memory again. It however didn’t last long when he felt a soft grip around his arm.
“I will be your support. I will always stand by your side no matter what.”
Her serious eyes silence Ohno immediately. As she bit her lower lip, she helped Ohno to get up and hold his hand.
“This place is dangerous. We should get out faster.”
Understood what she meant, he replied with a nodded. The two of them immediately made their move out from there; hand with hand. They were only few stepped from outside when she heard a crack sound from above them.
“Satoshi-kun!!!”
A strong pushed hit Ohno’s side followed by a loud sound of debris fell on him. For a while, he can’t see, hear and even felt anything around him. He didn’t know whether he was still alive or not as he can’t sense anything on his injured leg when he realizes it was trapped between the large ceiling fragment and floor.
“…Are you okay?”
The weak voice dragged him into reality again. Immediately, he lift his chin up for seek the owner’s of the voice in front him. However, the sight made his world like suddenly turned into upside down.
“What...w-why?”
His face slowly damp with tears. She however just weakly beams him with her sweet smile. Bit by bit, the floor where she was laying on stained with her blood as her lower body part was already crumbled by the large load of ceiling fragment. With her stomach laid on the floor, her shivering hand moved slowly to reach for Ohno’s.
“…Only few more hours right? You’ll win this.”
As he gripped tightly her fingers, he tried to move his leg out from the burden.
“Don’t.”
He stopped. In front of his eyes, he saw the only person he had tried her best to breathe properly with her eyes never left his.
“…We suppose…to see each…other on that…time right? I still…haven’t said…what I…want…to...”
Tears flow down as he heard the three words. Just if he didn’t get closer with her, just if he heard what her grandmother and sister told him to; THIS will never happened.
Tears slowly flow down to his cheek. After lost three persons his love most in front his eyes, he really lost his sight of life and future. Few times he tried to put end of his life, but none of them worked as his guardian will definitely succeed to save him. After all, it was the ‘reward’ that the survivors will get; always will be under their guardian protection until they die naturally.
“HURRY UP!”
Ohno startled by the noises that come from outside of the house area. Curious by it, he immediately stood on his feet to see what was happen outside of the house wall fence.
“What’s with that noise?”
Sleepily, Sho approaches the older guy from behind. He however freezes by the sight of the crowded road that now full with people who are rushing to take their leave to somewhere else.
“…Ohno-san?”
“…I-I also have no idea.”
Like Sho, he also completely confused with what they’re watching at. Fortunately, he saw someone he knows among that crowd.
“Kimie-san!”
The old lady immediately looks at him.
“Ah! Satoshi-kun! Long time no see!”
She approaches the wall fence with a smile. Immediately, Ohno politely bows before straightens up his body back with a confused face.
“Where are you going to?”
“Didn’t you watch the television? There’s a man who insist to commit suicide by wrap his body with bombs near the city capital.”
“What? Why?”
“I’m not so sure about it too. Just-”
A woman suddenly disturbs their conversation.
“I heard it because he lost his daughter in a tragic accident yesterday.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. He sounds like calling for anyone who ‘got the messages’ to come and face him now or he is going to activate another bomb that he already placed in 8 different places.”
Both Ohno and Sho widen their eyes.
“Got the message? Who was he meant to?”
“I don’t understand who he meant either. Just…something like ‘from Shinigami’ I heard. It was broadcast during the morning news just while ago.”
The two guys feel like their breath suddenly stopped by the woman’s explanation. Later soon, both women finally took their leave along with the crowded there. Ohno and Sho on the other hand couldn't do anything for a while as they're still shocked with what they just heard.
“...I-I’ll go inside and wake Aiba-san up.”
Immediately, he rushes inside the living room back. Hearing it, Ohno immediately moves to lock the sliding door and follow Sho inside. However, he stops abruptly when he saw a spectacles guy in a coat is looking at him from the other side of the house’s wall fence. He tries to remember whether that guy was one of his old neighbours, but nothing comes into his mind.
‘Who is-’
Suddenly, the guy bows to him.
“Ohno-san! Hurry up!”
Sho’s voice startled him immediately. After gives a quick bow, Ohno immediately locks the sliding door and follows the other two guys inside there to take their leave. As the spectacles guy saw them disappear in the crowd, he slightly curves with a smile before walks away from there.
