Project Eternity (Chapter 5)

Summary: Despite of government 'Project Eternity' declaration, 5 genius boys were saved after their parents managed to hide their real intelligence. 10 years later, they witness their parents get caught in misunderstand and aim to save them.
Yet, they never thought it will drag to something serious.
A/N: I'm sorry for every error and mistakes.
Chapter 5
On the next morning, the whole Japan surprise to find out about the explosion. Newspapers, radio, and television make report regarding it while everyone talk about the same topic. The deputy prime minister also makes his appearance at the burn out site and says his condolence to the family of the explosion victims no matter in what rank he or she is. He also announces that those unfortunate families are going to receive financial support especially for women who lose their husband and children who lose their father in that accident.
-[“Hundreds of people come to this site to pay their last respects for heroes who lost their life during last night explosion. Even the sky today looks cloudy like mourning for them as well. Absolutely, this incident will become another part of history for Japan. For the family of victims, we hope you will stay strong and be proud of your beloved one. Remember you are not alone-”]
Jun quickly pushes the switch off button. Nino who is lying on long couch not far from him just sighs and brings his right hand to rest on his forehead. Sho meanwhile doesn’t say anything but stares the floor under him.
“Heroes, huh? I never thought murdering someone so easily is something that you can feel proud of.”
“They don’t say anything about our parents or other victims’ dead. What a corrupt ministry.”
Both of them then fall into silent, slightly remembering what happen last night.
After they came out from Matsumoto’s residence and changed their clothes, they left to Ohno’s residence to take Mr. Ohno’s modified car so they can avoid themselves from tracked by government’s security system when they enter the headquarters’ area later. They were caught by Ohno’s older sister right when they ready to leave, but she didn’t stop them as she also worried about their parents’ condition. At the first check point, Jun somehow managed to make the guards there passed out and stole the uniform they wore last night. As for the final check point, Nino just broke their system and accessed into the highest level security to make the entire building turned to chaos.
Eventually, their real savior was actually Ohno’s sister. If not because she’s actually waiting for them in somewhere near the outline of the headquarters’ area last night, maybe they have been arrested by the new army troupe which came not long after their left.
“I bring some coffee.”
Ohno suddenly comes out from kitchen with a tray of coffee. He disappears inside there since moment ago to help his sister preparing for their breakfast.
“Where’s big sis?”
“Still inside there. She will join us soon.”
Jun nods. Ohno meanwhile just places the tray on living room’s table in front them before give the mugs on it to each of them. As he takes his seat on a single couch behind him, the house returns to silent again. The mood is so gloomy with everyone faces whether look pale or having red eyes due of crying and lack of sleep. Sometimes sound of mobile phone’s ringtone startle them, but no one bother to answer it. They know it’ll whether people ask about their parents after the last night news or asking if they’re fine.
“Where’s Masaki?”
“He hasn’t come down yet.”
Jun gets up immediately.
“Maybe I should talk to him.”
Just when he about to leaves to upstairs, Ohno’s sister come out from the kitchen with a plate full of sandwich. Her eyes look puffy which means she just crying while ago. Though she tries her best to smile to them, the sadness look so obvious in those guys’ eyes.
“If you don’t mind I want to bring some to Masaki.”
“Sure. I’ll go back and make some for him.”
“No, it’s okay. I just need another plate. You make more than enough for us already.”
Suddenly, they hear creak sound from upstairs. All attention in the living room goes to the stairs as they hear Aiba’s footsteps gradually become closer. Soon, the other one finally climb down before walk to them with his puffy and a bit red eyes.
“Good morning.”
He smiles which make the rest feel worry with his condition.
“Morning. Are you okay?”
Aiba nods. Ohno then immediately bring him to sit on empty couch nearby before gives the friend of his a mug of coffee. The cheerful guy slowly takes it but just use it to warm up his cold hands. He just silently stare the hot coffee for a while before finally looks up at his friends again.
“I know they’re just apart from us. I can feel it.”
“They?”
Aiba nods again.
“Masaki, you need to face the reality. Our mom and dad are gone. You can’t be like this.”
“But Jun, it’s not impossible right? Maybe you guys mistook it-”
“We’re not Aiba-chan. We really saw them back then. You’re still confused.”
They stare their friend worriedly when he starts to chew his lip. Ohno’s sister then gently takes the mug from Aiba’s hold and smile.
“I’ll make warm milk for you. It’ll make you easy to go sleep after this.”
She says before enter back the kitchen. None of them say anything for a while until Nino all of sudden flinch painfully. Quickly, the others move to him.
“Don’t worry guys. I think I was moving too harsh before.”
“You want to sit?”
The hacker nods. With Ohno and Jun help, he slowly sits and leans on the couch. Few whines escape his mouth as he shift to find for a comfortable position. Sho who just shut his mouth from the moment his friends explain about their parents’ dead, finally couldn’t help but break down. He immediately gets up, startling his friends by the sudden movement.
“Sho? What’s wro-”
“I’m sorry.”
Tears flow down from his eyes. Of course his words make the other four guys worry, but before they can approach him, Sho suddenly kneels down and bows forward while closing his eyes regretfully.
“This is my entire fault. I’m so sorry.”
He starts to sniff when more tears pour down to his face. Seeing their friend start to sob and trembling, the others make their way to him quickly. Nino who still can’t move too much only can watch when Ohno and Aiba pull Sho gently to sit up while Jun stands near them.
“Don’t be like this Sho. Nothing of this is your fault.”
“No. this is my entire fault. If I wasn’t caught by them, there’s no need for you guys to come and save me. Our mom and dad must be still alive too.”
“You never want any of this to happen too. Those people almost make you lost your life. That’s why we came.”
“You’re our friend and we have the commonness which the government is looking for. So we understand your situation. Now, stop blaming yourself, okay?”
He rubs the other one back, trying to calm him down. Sho however still can’t stop crying and bring his chin down to avert their stare.
“If…If I were never born, mom and dad have no reason to hide me. They wouldn’t be drag away and your parents will never leave and save them. T-This is…my fault.”
“Sho! Don’t say that!”
Sho just shakes his head and clenches his teeth.
“I-I’m so sorry.”
Aiba quickly moves his hand to shake gently the other one shoulder.
“Listen here. If you never born, the four us must never been here now. We’ll never get to know each other like now and our family must be carrying a major depression for losing us. It’s because of you we can live freely like now. Nothing is your fault.”
“Yet, I’m the one…who cause this.”
“Sho-”
They surprise when Jun suddenly grabs Sho up to face him. Sho who is still depresses by the guilty and shock that he needs to bear just lock his eyes on the floor while sobbing.
“Stop saying that can’t you?! You’re not the only one who hurt now!”
“Jun, calm down.”
“I won’t if this guy keep saying nonsense thing! I know he’s depress but he’s not the only one! I’ve my limit too and if he keeps blaming himself about this...”
No more words come from Jun’s mouth. He just grits his teeth, trying his best to not break down right there. As he swallows his feelings hardly, Ohno and Aiba immediately approach them and make Jun to let go of the other one. Ohno then brings Sho to sit back on his seat while Aiba rubs gently Jun’s back, trying to calm down the other one.
It’s understandable if Sho feels that way. How on earth someone wouldn’t blame himself after his parents involved in serious matter just because to cover him up, his friends almost lost their life to save him and lost their parents also because of him though he also face the same loss like them. However, Jun also already reach his limit. He couldn’t sleep for the entire night because of what they’ve seen and the responsibility that he feels for telling Sho and Nino about what was happened to their parents. He tried to not break down since last night for their sake, but now he couldn’t hold back his sadness anymore.
Immediately, he stormed into the guest room nearby and closes the door behind him. Soon, the only woman in that house quickly comes out by their noise. She however couldn’t bring herself to ask anything when realizing how tense the mood in the living room already is.
“Ah, I’ll take that big sis. Thanks.”
She looks at Aiba before gives the mug in her hold to the younger one. Seeing there’s nothing she can do for them anymore there, she leaves to get inside her room on the upstairs, dragging the living room into silent again. A moment later, Aiba finally gets up and walks into the kitchen with his now empty mug. As he comes out again, he shoves his hand into his jeans pocket to make sure all his personal stuff with him before looks at his friends again.
“Guys, I need to go to my family’s restaurant.”
Ohno, Sho and Nino immediately lift their gaze to him.
“Why? It’s dangerous for us to wondering outside now.”
“I’ll be careful. The restaurant’s workers contacted me before. They asked me if they shouldn’t open the restaurant today and if mom and dad are alright. So…I think it’s better if I go and see them to talk about it.”
“Then, I’ll go there with you.”
Ohno quickly wants get up, but immediately stops by the other one.
“No. it’s okay.”
“But-”
“I need to be alone for a while.”
The three guys’ expression softens a bit. Sho who doesn’t utter anything since while ago finally lifts his head to look at his friend.
“Okay. Just promise you’ll not return here late.”
“Also, can you please bring some clean clothes for me?”
The cheerful guy nods before picks Ninomiya’s house keys on the living room’s table in front him. Just in case it’s needed, he also takes Jun’s keys with him before asks if his friends have anything that they want him to buy for them. Only after he steps out and mutely closes the front door, Jun finally comes out with slightly red eyes. He only realizes that Aiba is nowhere to be found right when he takes his seat next to Nino.
“Where’s Masaki?”
“He went to his family’s restaurant. There’s something he need to settle with the employees.”
“Alone?”
“He said he needs it.”
Jun blinks by Nino’s answer. Then, he nods understandingly.
When the house back to silent for the unknown times already, Ohno immediately moves to grab for the television’s remote to lift up the mood. As soon as the television switches on however, the same face of news female reporter appears again.
“Change the channel Oh-chan. I don’t want to see they talk nonsense about that anymore.”
“Am going to.”
Sho on the other hand realizes something about the broadcasted. Immediately, he stops his friend right before the latter press other channel’s button.
“Wait. I think they’re reporting about something else.”
Ohno frowningly turns to him. The four guys’ attention then goes to the screen which the same reporter now looks like explaining about something with panic expression.
-[“Hundred of parents and relatives who their children were brought to join Project Eternity are gathering in this site, demanding for the minister’s explanation about their children’s safety. Currently, the armies still don’t make any move to chase the crowd away. But if there’s any sign of roughness, they probably will use tear gas again like yesterday demonstration.”]
Soon, the news reporter suddenly back away when the families of last night explosion victims crowd start to throw stones and stuff to the special kids’ parents’ crowd.
“What are they doing? Trying to kill each other?”
“This is bad.”
His friends turn to him immediately.
“Seems the government almost wins everyone’s heart.”
Their expressions change by Sho’s words. When the reporter starts to talk again, they quickly look at the screen in front them again.
-[“Seems the families of last night victim angry by the new crowd rudeness to interrupt this event. I can see the parents’ crowd try to return the attack as well. I’ll move closer for better sight.”]
Yet, she abruptly stops when a gunshot to air suddenly echoes. At first, the fight between the two sides doesn’t show any sign to stop, but after a warning that tear gas will be spray to them, bit by bit the situation back to under the armies’ control again. After sure enough that everything back to normal again, the deputy prime minister determinedly steps forward despite of his guards’ persuade to make him stay behind them. He then asks for one of the television stations there to lend him a microphone before looks at the crowd in front him.
-[“From deep of my heart, let me say my condolence to all the family victims again.”]
The crowd turns to silent when he bows down. When he finally straightens up again, he calmly brings his gaze to his audience for once more and starts his speech.
-[“It really touched me that this huge crowd in front me are gathering here for their beloved one whether that beloved one was the last night explosion victims or special children. It proved that our people in this country really care about each other.”]
He gains some applause from his audience. Soon, he lifts his hand, signaling the crowd to let him continue.
-[“For the parents, your children are safe. I can guarantee they’ll be just fine under our surveillance. So, all of you can calm down now.”]
-[“We want proof!”]
The sudden shout from one of parents there make crowd around him to shout as support. The minister immediately lifts his hand again to ask the crowd for calm down.
-[“We don’t need to prove it.”]-
The crowd starts to move forward to protest it. Yet, the minister continues exactly before they’re going berserk.
-[“Ladies and gentlemen, let me finish my word first. I said we don’t need to prove it because your children are working under us and for the sake of Japan’s future. So, there’s no reason for us to put them in harm since they’re not only helping us to conduct this country but also doing a research so we can have a better life. That’s why I want all of you to believe me that they’re all safe under our care. Besides, I often heard these amazing children feel proud that they can serve our country, not only for us the government, but also for the citizens and their family outside there.”]
Another ton of applauses give to him.
-[“Project Eternity is for the sake of our country’s future. Like you have seen, Japan through a lot of development and economy boost since these past years, so this project is made not for nothing. But, there’s one thing I still want to make clear here.”]
His tone suddenly changes to a firm one.
“If there’s anything like Kita Shouji-kun’s case happen again, we the government won’t take it lightly anymore. Those people who try to hide these special kids are trying to sacrifice our nation’s bright future. So starting from this moment, I’ll give the military full authority to arrest anyone who they think try to hide special kids or anything to do with it. Any interrogation and investigation process are not required anymore.”]
Sho and his friends completely turn to speechless. Meanwhile, the entire crowd that gathering at the burn out site turn to each other frowningly while whispering. The deputy prime minister then bows down again before leave the site despite of the protest from small crowd of parents who dissatisfy by his announced. Still in shock state, Ohno immediately turn the television off. As he looks at his friends, he receives a same tense look from each of them.
“They’re really going too far this time.”
“I think the government must be thinking that they have power to change and make new rules for us.”
“But, doesn’t the government should afraid if those parents and relatives are going to declare war with them and hold demonstration again?”
“It’s tyranny of the majority.”
Sho’s words make the rest to look at him immediately.
“What do you mean?”
“Usually in politics they’re using majority rules which large votes win against the small one. In this case the government manages to make families who don’t have Cool’s to trust them, so for parents who have Cool, they’ll be in minority group. Since the government already proves to society that they can bring tons of development to Japan, they don’t need to worry about any protest or disagree because people who like to stay under their rule and their aggressive followers will be their ‘unofficial armies’ to step forward and fight the minority group.”
“I see. So the majority will have full authority over the minority. The percentage of family without Cool in Japan is almost 90%, so the minority doesn’t have any choice but obey the rule.”
Nino snorts.
“In other words, the parents need to against the society first before they can face the government. It’s surely a dirty tactic.”
Sho just nods.
“And it also means that those parents are going to face a horrible misjudge from the society if they keep on fighting. It’s not impossible if these parents will be called as terrorist one day.”
Ohno furiously tightens his fist.
“The government must be planning all this from earlier then.”
They lose in their own thought for a while. Despite of the ridiculous speech that the deputy prime minister just says while ago, it’s also hard to accept that almost the entire nation has an unbelievable low intelligence level till they can buy what he say that easily.
Suddenly, Jun lifts up his face before turns to them with worry look.
“Masaki is currently out there. Unless the military still didn’t know that we broke into their territory …”
He doesn’t need to continue his sentence when Ohno, Sho and Nino turn to him immediately. Quickly then the chemist takes out his cell phone and dials for Aiba’s number. All eyes there stick on him worriedly as he brings his phone to his ear and wait for their friend to pick it up. Few moments pass until he hears voicemail from the other line.
“He didn’t answer it.”
Sho swiftly gets up from his seat.
“Let’s go and find him now. Nino, try to contact him and inform us if you found something.”
The hacker nods. The other three guys then run as fast as they can to the door. They quickly wear their shoes before Ohno runs to open the front door. To his surprise, he found two men in suit are standing in front the door and readily to press the bell next to it.
“Who are you guys?”
Both men also look surprise, but immediately face them and bow down.
“We’re sorry for bothering you.”
Sho and Jun wonderingly take a look from behind their friend as the two men straighten up again.
“We’re looking for Chief Sakurai’s son. Is there among you name Sakurai Sho?”

“If you need anything, just tell us directly. Okay, Masaki?”
Aiba nods before returns one of his father’s workers hugs. As he ends it, he smilingly pats the other one arm; thanking him for the comfort. During his walk to come to the place back then, he decides to let the restaurant’s running under their care for a while. The restaurant after all can’t be closed forever and the workers need their earnings to live especially in expensive city like Tokyo.
“Then, I’ll leave now. I’ll come back here to help you guys when I ready.”
“Okay. Take you your time. Leave the rest on us.”
He nods again before bows down to all the employees. With a wave then, he bid them goodbye before start to walk away from there.
Now, he only needs to drop off at Nino’ place since he already stops by at Jun’s house on his way before. He as well has Sho’s clothes inside the bag pack on his shoulder considering that the five of them fortunately often spend their day off together and always make sure to keep their clothes at least a pair in each other house as they. Besides, there’s no way they can get inside Sho’s house after the yesterday incident.
Soon, Aiba feels his phone is vibrating inside his pocket. He clumsily tries to take it out, but accidently drop out a palm size black rectangular thing onto the ground as well. After picks both things from under him, he quickly flips his phone open and frown when realizes it is a missed call from Jun.
“Maybe he wants to know if his keys with me…”
Aiba pursues his lips and quickly form a text message to reply the other one. As soon as he finish it, he immediately press the send button before shoves his cell phone back into his pocket. That’s when he finally looks again at the black rectangular device that he found inside the government’s building last night in his other hand.
His real intention to sneak into the other side of government’s building last night is to look for Sho’s father silver gun. The moment he stood in front the General Officer’s room however, he couldn’t get inside since it required a code to open the door. Felt disappoint, Aiba decided to return to where Nino is waiting at before a sudden bark from corridor behind made him abruptly stopped. He found nothing when he quickly turned around, but before he realized it, he already started to move deeper into the dark corridor to look for the sound’s source. The moment he finally reached the corridor end, he noticed that one of the doors on his right was slightly opened and carefully took a look inside it. It was then when he found the black rectangular device inside an open locker there.
‘I wonder what this actually made for.’
Aiba starts to examine the thing. When he notices a square button on the side of it, he curiously moves his finger to press for it. Yet, a sudden pat on his shoulder from behind jolts him up immediately and makes him clumsily turns around while hiding the device back into his pocket.
He however surprise when he realizes who the person actually is.
“You?”
